Branch members are given special recognition for their outstanding work

Patrick Kieran, chairman of the Caithness Branch and Mandy MacLean who plays a key role in running the Cafe Scientifique in Glasgow, have been recognised in the 2010 New Year’s Day Honours list.

Patrick Kieran, Senior Design Engineer, was awarded an MBE for his services to science and is well-known and respected in Caithness for his enthusiastic promotion of innovative scientific projects. He has had a long involvement in organising and running Young Engineer clubs in primary and secondary schools and North Highland College.

Mandy Maclean, Professor of Pulmonary Pharmacology, was awarded an MBE for her services to science. She received a special recognition for public understanding of science events and training young scientists. She is also heavily involved in scientific communication and directs Glasgow's Café Scientifique, a forum for speakers from all fields of science to promote discussion with the public.
