New Years Day honours

Three close affiliates of the British Science Association have been recognised in the 2010 New Year’s Day Honours, including two of our Honorary Fellows and a judge from the National Science & Engineering Competition.

Michael Peter Briggs OBE is Principal of Southlands College and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Roehampton University. He has held various positions at the British Science Association from 1980 to 1990, before becoming our Chief Executive, a position which he held for twelve years.

He is a member of the International Programme Council at the International Centre for the Advancement of Scientific Literacy (Chicago Academy of Sciences), a Member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Associations for the Advancement of Science and Technology and an Honorary Fellow of the British Science Association.

He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the honours list.

Sir John Holman, the current Director of the National Science Learning Centre, and was the Government’s first National STEM Director with responsibility overseeing the implementation of the STEM Programme Report.

He is one of the UK’s most widely respected science educators, with a major hand in many of the most influential curriculum development schemes of the past 25 years. He was President of the Education Section of the Association in 2005 and is now an Honorary Fellow.

He was awarded a knighthood in the honours list.

Marcus du Sautoy OBE is a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford. He is currently an EPSRC Senior Media Fellow and he was recently appointed to the Simonyi Professorship for the Public Understanding of Science, succeeding Richard Dawkins.

He is currently a judge for the National Science & Engineering Competition, led by the British Science Association and was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the honours list.
